Servant Year is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is Servant Year's mission to enable young men and women to work within social service agencies to serve the under-served of Philadelphia. To do this, Servant Year provides its members with housing, transportation assistance, health insurance, loan forbearance and a monthly $500.00 stipend.
Servant Year members, or "interns," are provided with the opportunity to take part in living within an intentional Christian community doing social service work within a partnering agency. As a faith-based, AmeriCorps program, spiritual formation and compassion are essential components of the Servant Year experience. The program includes frequent guest speakers and four retreats per year to locations such as: Boston MA - The Poconos in Pennsylvania - The New Jersey Shore - New York City. All retreats carry an emphasis on spiritual discovery, community building, and relaxation.

As a faith-based AmeriCorps social-service program, completed participation in the Servant Year internship program often leads to job placement in non-profit organizations that are partnered with Servant Year. Such organizations inlcude: Covenant House, Project H.O.M.E., Lutheran Children and Family Services (LCFS), United Community SouthEastern Pennsylvania (UCSP), Volunteers of America, and more.
During an internship, participants of the Servant Year program may be placed at one of the above social-service organizations. When placed within a partnering agency, Servant Year members are given the opportunity to work with populations in need. These populations include homeless children and youth, homeless adults, at-risk children and youth, as well as other peoples in need of assistance. Completed participation in Servant Year often leads to job placement within Philadelphia social service agencies or graduate school enrollment.
An intern working with the Servant Year program commits to working 51 weeks for a total of 1700 hours (36 hours per week) with vacations/holidays etc. Interns receive a stipend of five-hundred dollars per month (less taxes), housing, health coverage, and the opportunity to assist those in need within a faith-based environment.
